Cam James Fox is a sculptor living and working in Portland, Maine. Growing up with an extensive stuffed animal collection, Cam’s accumulative tendencies now inform the three-dimensional objects he creates.
Fox received his BFA in Sculpture with Honors from Maine College of Art & Design in the spring of 2026. He has shown work with Field Projects (NYC, NY), 100,000,000 Space (Kansas City, MO), 82 Parris (Portland, ME), among others. Cam’s ideal day consists of wearing wrinkly pants and searching for trinkets in thrift stores that fit in the palm of his hand and close to his heart.
Artist Statement
My sculptures are parts of my body that exist just outside of myself. I draw out my memories and embed them in material, finding honesty in futile performance. Memory therefore becomes a tangible material in my work, something that I can imbue or reject. I view humor as a tool to dismantle and reconstruct my queer identity; a 2x4 becomes a stage where plastic gemstones and scrap combine to create forms that are halfhearted performers at best. I yearn to understand how our bodies interact with objects and the magic that arises from these encounters.
Through the act of creating, I am investigating rigid material and the handmade. Haphazard material applications allow for objects to exist honestly, secure in their objecthood. By distilling subjects to find their material essence, I investigate inner mythologies and unnamed energies. Pieces of a whole assemble together, as if the work is in its own process of remembering, remaking, and transformation.
